This picture was taken in 2011 but I think it's perfect for this blog. I was inspired but a similar picture I saw so we tried to replicate it.
So we have 1 flash on the right in a slight angle, 2 big pieces of sheetrock as reflectors and blanket that has long hair to help absorb the light.
As you can see the hammer is hung upside down with 2 pieces of wood. The top piece is fixed on the ceiling beam and the bottom piece is held by a bolt so it can swing freely.
We Macgyvered the flash trigger so that when the 2 wires touch, it would trigger the flash. You can see the wires and the flash trigger in the upper right part of the setup picture. Because we didn't have any ambient light, it was almost impossible to manually trigger the flash at the perfect time so by using the wires, we could do micro adjustments. We still broke like 20+ bottles.
Even with the hammer pulled all the way up, sometimes it would just push the bottle and not even breaking it.
So we added a thumbtack on the hammer. This gave us much better results.
This was shot with a Canon 50D + 100mm F/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens.
