I did a water droplet shot back in 2010 with my Canon 50D + 50mm 1.4 USM and I was inspired to try it again but with different colors. The colors in this picture we simply a white balance adjustment.
This was much more difficult than I anticipated. I actually tried yesterday as well but I wasn't successful.
First, the water bag (I forgot to include it in the setup picture) needs to be fairly low so it doesn't create a big splash.
Second, focusing was very difficult with the macro tubes added. I think a longer lens would've been better. My lens was so close to the water it was getting wet from the splash.
Third, creating the color highlights wasn't as simple as I thought. The red worked well but the blue, not so much. I think I know why and I'll explain later.
Here's the setup:
I have a ziplock bag (same as my hand water droplet shot) that's hanging around 1 meter from the bowl. A red piece of paper directly behind the bowl lit by the Yongnuo YN560III. A blue piece of paper behind the camera in an angle lit by another flash (Yongnuo YN560). I think if the blue paper wouldn't be titled back, it would've been better. Another option would be to place the blue paper directly on top of the camera but that would be tricky to light.
I covered the flash with black paper because it was creating crazy highlights. Maybe that's what caused my black spot?
So here are the settings for this shot. This was taken with my Fujifilm X-T20 + Rokinon 50mm 1.2 + extension tubes (minimum used). The YN560III was set to 1/64 + 0.7 power at 105mm and the YN560 was set to 1/2 power at 105mm.
This is out of camera raw with Lightroom presets (Adobe Color):
I bought my camera second hand and unfortunately, you can see a scratch on the sensor glass. I only noticed now because of the tubes and shooting at F/11. It's not a big deal since it's not showing up in my other pictures.
I think it's too bad I couldn't manage to get more blue in there. I think the colors are mixing up because that's more purple than red. Also, I didn't notice that big black patch in the front. Live and learn.
I applied some split toning to get achieve these colors, especially the shadow. I also bumped the clarity to make give it more a crystal look.
You need patience for this shot. There's a lot of tweaking and errors you'll only notice after. I might try this again in the future in the hope to improve from this shot.
