Usually, in the evening I like going downstairs to read or watch TV. It's a nice way to relax for me. I wanted to capture that moment but it was tricky to make it look interesting but there are small details I did that worked well.
Here's the setup:
I switched back and forth between my 27mm and 50mm. I think a wider than 27mm would've looked interesting but I preferred the look with the 50mm compared to the 27mm. So here are the 4 things I did to make something boring looks somewhat interesting.
First I moved the couch and table on the opposite wall. The reason is that there's no distraction in the background. In its original location, I could see the frame of the closet.
Second, since there's not much color, black and white actually make it look warmer.
Third, I arranged items in the frame like the pillow to fill in the right side. Even the placement of the cup or the book makes a difference.
Fourth, I did a crop of 4x3 to remove dead space from the top and bottom. This made a huge difference and it's something I should consider more often.
I took this with my Fujifilm X-T20 + Rokinon 50mm 1.2 from about eye level. This is out of camera raw with Lightroom presets (Adobe Monochrome) + 4x3 crop:
My picture was a little bit underexposed but I was more concerned about the highlights than the black clipping. I cranked the shadows up a lot to get more details in the chair.
