I saw a cool picture of 3 ice cubes stacked and I wanted to create something similar. It ended up really different but it's nice to be inspired by something and then you can go and create your own.
I bought these cool acrylic ice cubes on Amazon. They're a little cheap. You need to polish them because they come scuffed and not shiny like glass. I used a headlight polisher and it worked great.
So here's the setup:
I have 2 flashes for the background with gels (one purple and the other a very light purple). I also have one (on the far right) point at the cubes. There's also a white reflector to create more highlights.
I used my TV glass shelf for a platform, the same as my beer bottle shot. I find it works well for clear products.
For the background, I used wrinkled aluminum foil. With the flashes, it creates some nice bokeh. I needed to create a big distance because I wanted to shoot my subject at F/5.6 to have it sharp as I'm at the minimum focus distance. When you're that close, the depth of field isn't very thick.
So here's the equipment list we used with their setting:
Fujifilm X-T20 + Rokinon 50mm 1.2
Flash to the left: light blue/purple gel 24mm at 1/128
Flash to the right: purple gel 24mm at 1/64
Flash to the far right: I don't remember, but I remember it was zoomed at around 70mm and around 1/64 power.
With the Rokinon 50mm lens, I couldn't get close enough to fill in the frame and with the macro tubes it was too close so I went as close as I could and then used a 4x5 crop which turned out really nice.
When we had our shot, we decided to experiment with the foil by removing some, just leaving a strip and come up with the following shot.
