Abandoned Railroad

I had this location in mind for a while now and I was saving it for autumn when the colors of the leaves are at its peak. Unfortunately, I didn't make enough effort to go and it didn't take long for the leaves to fall because of strong winds.

One late morning I was looking outside and the sun was piercing through some clouds and I got the sudden urge to go shoot at that location and I'm glad I did.

Here's my setup:

Maybe I should've been more centered but I wanted to capture the curve of the track leading right.

Sure there weren't many leaves left on the trees but there was a lot on the ground which made it looks really nice. The sun was hiding a lot behind the clouds so I only had a limited time before the big clouds would cover for good.

This shot was with my Fujifilm X-T20 + Fujinon 27mm F/2.8. This is out of camera raw with Lightroom presets (Adobe Color):

I was originally going for those warm and saturated colors but I quickly found out it wasn't going to work without much leaves left on the trees. So I went with dark and moody instead.

There's a lot of work on this image. The first thing was to lower the vibrancy by a fair amount. I did a lot of brushing to emphasize the railroad (dodge and burn). I darken the side and brighten the tracks. As for the HSL/Colors, I moved a lot of the hues to the left to make it a little warmer, desaturated the greens and blues, and removed a lot of luminance on the greens.

Going out doesn't guaranty an image but it will guaranty some learning of some sort. If you didn't get a good image, you learned what makes it a bad image weather by editing, composition or by the conditions.
