It was a boring gray day and my son was disappointed he couldn't play with his friends. The way the light hit him when he was near the window quickly made me get my camera.
I was determined to shoot wide open but knew my challenges with a manual lens. I don't trust focus peaking enough yet so I placed the focus box on his eye when I had my composition. I then zoomed in to manually focus. Once focused, I quickly took the shot. It's obviously not the quickest and any movement the subject makes between your focus and shutter won't be sharp, especially wide open.
My subject (son) was very nice and good at posing for me. I told him to look outside and look bored. He didn't need to try much. I don't have a setup shot as this was handheld but I have my subject in front of me with him looking directly outside. This is a big window that lets a lot of light in. Maybe even too much as you can see, the highlights are a bit high.
This was shot with my Fujifilm X-T3 + Rokinon 50mm 1.2. This is out of camera raw with Lightroom presets (Adobe Monochrome):
These pictures usually don't require much. Brought the highlights down, increase shadows, etc. Some small local adjustments.
50mm 1/250s F/1.2 ISO 200 |
I usually like black and white for these kinds of shots but I also liked the colored version as well.
I'm really happy with this picture and even though this Covid-19 is terrible without it maybe I wouldn't have gotten this picture. Certain situations can give you opportunities even if the situation isn't great.
