Snowy Trees Sunset

I was expecting a spectacular sunset because of the clouds. I didn't have much time so I tried this tree line again just outside my house. In that shot, my focus was the sky, this time I wanted to capture the snow on the trees. I didn't have my zoom back then so I was happy to zoom in on the trees. I can't get physically closer because of the road and also, it changes the sky color perspective. My position is a little elevated and this helps with the colors in the sky.

This shot was with my Fujifilm X-T3 + Fujinon XF55-200mm. This is out of camera raw with Lightroom presets (Adobe Color):

A lot going on here. First is the more and more common 4x5 crop. I lifted the shadows, the whites, and a bit of clarity. A very minor S curve with the tone curve. Surprisingly, I didn't touch the colors. That's it for the global adjustments. For local, I have a gradient filter for the sky and I dropped the highlights by a lot and the exposure by just a little bit. That's it for the sky. I have another gradient filter for the trees. This one is targeted at the darkest area with a luminance mask and I raised the exposure a bit. Oh, I have another gradient filter just at the bottom of the frame to darken that area.

I thought that was done but I felt the trees were still a bit dark. I didn't want to raise the exposure or the shadows too much because that would look a little weird. Also, this is the evening so it's normal it's a bit dark. I used a local brush and I painted over the snow whites area and I applied a luminance mask for the bight areas and increased the whites. This made a huge difference in contrast with the snow. I finished in photoshop to remove the powerlines.

200mm 1/10sec F/9 ISO 160

I almost discarded this picture because I couldn't get the look I wanted. Also, this lens at 200mm is a bit soft. I later learned through testing that at 200mm, it's better to shoot at F/13. Dodging and burning really make an image pop. Global adjustments are nice but it's only to get started. You can decide where the attention goes.
